NIDR Oral Health Surveys
Three national oral health surveys were conducted by the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR) between 1979 and 1987.
NIDR is the predecessor agency to the current National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Subsequent survey data collection
sponsored by NIDCR has been conducted through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III).
Copies of public use research materials from NIDR surveys are available on CD-ROM for single-use research purposes, free of charge.
The National Dental Caries Prevalence Survey: 1979–1980, also referred to as OHSC I. This survey was conducted on a multi-stage probability sample of
37,703 U.S. school children, aged 5–17, during the 1979–1980 school year. Data were collected by visual and tactile dental examination. Parents or guardians of
these children completed questionnaires on residential histories, source of drinking water, and fluoride exposure. Survey results provided estimates on the
prevalence of coronal caries, gingivitis and treatment needs of school children.

The National Survey of Oral Health in U.S. School Children: 1986–1987, also referred to as OHSC II. This survey was specifically designed to monitor
national progress in eliminating dental caries as a major public health problem and to provide estimates of the prevalence of dental fluorosis, gingival
bleeding, periodontal diseases, and soft tissue lesions in school-aged children. Examination data were collected on over 40,000 children. Additional
questionnaires completed by the parents or guardians provided extensive residential histories and the sources of drinking water, including natural or
adjusted fluoride exposure, if known. Past history and current use of tobacco and alcohol products was asked of students in grades 6 through 12.

The National Survey of Oral Health in U.S. Employed Adults and Seniors: 1985–1986. This survey was the first national study to establish the prevalence
of coronal caries, root surface caries, and periodontal destruction among a readily accessible adult population. Data were collected from 15,132 employed adults
who were given oral health examinations in their employment settings and 5,686 adults aged 65 and older in senior centers. Data for the seniors component of this
survey is currently unavailable.
Public use research materials available from this survey include:
